Black Gold Winds - Introducing Douglas Thrower
Douglas Scott Thrower is a free-lance music composer and arranger. Currently he is the brass arranger for the Canton Bluecoats, a top competitive marching ensemble of Drum Corps International and the 2016 world champion. Doug has been in this role since 1997 and is considered one of the best music arrangers in the marching activity. You only have to listen to the voice and unique sound he gives the Bluecoats’ brass section. He is associated with signature music features, well known in the marching activity, that include Simon & Garfunkel’s
The Boxer, Creep from Radiohead, The Great Gig In The Sky by Pink Floyd, and the wistful ballad Hymn of Acxiom by singer-songwriter Vienna Teng who personally sent him accolades when she heard the Bluecoats rendition.
He has instructed and arranged for a number of bands and drum corps over the years including The Bluecoats, Pacific Crest, The Troopers, Dutch Boy and the Canadian Knights (1986 Class A World Champions). Doug also composes and arranges for a number of high schools and university bands across North America. That list includes Western Carolina University, Marshall University, the University of Texas and University of Utah.
In addition to arranging music for marching ensembles Doug writes for various ensembles (jazz and symphonic) and theatre groups. Doug was a student of Don Johnson in trumpet performance at Humber College (Toronto) and studied jazz performance at McGill University in Montreal. He has recorded performances for the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) and can be heard on four recordings by the McGill Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Gordon Foote. Doug and his wife Evelyn Blackwell have two daughters, Shelby and Claire, and make their home in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

Black Gold Winds Ensemble Director - Shayne O' Brien
Shayne O‘ Brien was born and raised in County Tipperary, Ireland. He spent 4 years in London, UK where he graduated from the London College of Music with a Bachelors degree in Jazz Performance and a minor in Music Education. Shayne’s time in London was busy and fulfilling. He’s played on London’s West End, made appearances on BBC with the Collaborative Orchestra and has had performances with the Coldstream Guards of Westminster. On the jazz side of things, Shayne has played with numerous big bands in London which include playing lead trumpet for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) and his own band, The WL Jazz Collective.
Shayne is no stranger in the drum corps/marching band community. He started his marching career in Ireland in 2008 where he was introduced to Drum Corps International. After marching in Ireland, Shayne decided to travel across seas in 2011 to march Kidsgrove Scouts, who are based in the U.K. In 2013 and 2014 Shayne marched with The Cadets as a
trumpet player. He returned to DCI in 2016 for his age out where he was a lead trumpet soloist for the Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps, who were crowned DCI World Champions for the first time in history in 2016.
Teaching is a very passionate part of Shayne’s life and has led him to teach in several different parts of Europe and the United States. Shayne currently resides in Texas with his beautiful wife where he teaches several high school bands and appears at many as a clinician. In 2017, Shayne was apart of the Blue Knights Brass staff and The Battalion
Brass staff which amplified his love and passion for the world of education. Shayne is extremely excited to be apart of the Black Gold Winds program this year and will be taking on the position of Ensemble Director.
We would like to wish all of our 2018 Cast Members and all of our Alumni that are auditioning for Drum Corps this weekend Good Luck! Stay Gold!
