Director - Roman Montoya
This is Roman's twenty-fifth season with Black Gold Winterguard. His first year was is 1996. He has served as a director since 2003. He has also been movement instructor/technician for many, many years.
Roman is the choreographer for the Waxahachie Color Guard and Winterguard and has been on the visual design team for 5 years. Roman was the movement instructor with the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps for two seasons. He has also worked with The Glassmen of Toledo, OH, The Bluecoats of Canton, OH, and was the head of the movement department at the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps from Atlanta, GA in 2018. Roman is also a choreographer/ clinician/ consultant for many color guards in Texas.
Roman also serves as the Director of Bands at Donna Shepard Intermediate School in the Mansfield Independent School District in Mansfield, TX. This is his tenth year with the district. Prior to teaching at DSIS, Mr. Montoya was Assistant Director of Bands and Director of Color Guards at North Crowley High School in Ft. Worth, TX for three years. Mr. Montoya taught with Moore Public Schools in Moore, OK for ten years before moving to Texas. He was Assistant Director at Moore High School, Director of Highland West Junior High and Director of Color Guards.
Mr. Montoya received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from The University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM.
Director - Chance Livar
This is Chance's seventh year as a Director of Black Gold. Chance has been connected to the color guard activity for over seventeen years now. He started with the Midlothian Elegance Winter Guard in 2003. After high School, Chance went on to perform with the UTA Marching Band as a member of the color guard. Since then, he has performed with two high-profile winter guards out of the DFW Area: both the Ars Nova Winter Guard A, Open, and World groups in 2007, 2008, 2012, and 2013 respectively, and the Black Gold Independent World Class Winter Guard in 2009, 2010, and 2011. He has been to WGI World Championships ten times and has made finals twice. Chance marched two summers, 2008 and 2009, with the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corp from Boston, MA making DCI World Class finals twice and then went on to serve as the Tour Director/Color Guard Technician for them for three years as well (2010, 2011, and 2012). Chance was also apart of The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps Color Guard Staff in 2016.
Chance began teaching color guard directly out of high school starting with his Alma Mater for the 2006-2007 school season. In the summer of 2007, Chance taught color guard camps throughout the nation as a staff member for Marching Auxiliaries of America. Since then has worked at Lakeview Centennial HS, Western Hills HS, Alvarado HS, Trinity HS, Mansfield Summit HS, Midlothian HS, Mansfield Timberview HS, Allen HS, Weatherford HS, Burleson Centennial HS, North Crowley HS, Kennedale HS, MacArthur High School, Plano Vines High School, Grand Prairie High School, and Pleasant Grove High School.
Mr. Livar is Currently in his fourth year as the Texas Christian University Color Guard Director and his second year as the Bryant High School(Arkansas) Designer. Last Summer Chance served as the Color Guard Caption Head of Spirit of Atlanta and this Fall will be his second year as the Director of the Duncanville High School Color Guard. He has marched under and taught with well-respected directors from around the nation via his years with professional winterguard and his drum corps experiences.
